BEGINNER BASICS JULY 15TH TO SEPTEMBER 16TH 2025

This is a skills-building class: the first 5 lessons start with teaching and a demonstration, then student practice. This will enable you to do a different painting exercise each week, where you will learn to apply;

• Colour mixing - prevent muddy colours/create harmony
• Understanding hue, saturation, and value
• Value and contrast - how light and dark creates depth and form
• Composition - a balanced and dynamic layout directs the viewer's eye 
• How to effectively work from reference photos
• 2 kinds of perspective - Create realism and believable space 
• Brush technique - control texture, edges and form
• How to set up and start a painting step by step

We will complete a series of smaller drawings and painting exercises to loosen up and build confidence and skills. We will discuss and be influenced by examples from traditional and contemporary artists. In the second half of the course, students can start to work on their own subject matter.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

Paint, brushes, a palette, an apron, graphite pencil, eraser, notebook, and an A4 or A3 sketchbook of mixed media paper, 

(or canvas, cardboard, or painting board for painting exercises). 

I teach the course based on these colours in JO SONJE acrylic paint: 

ULTRAMARINE BLUE

YELLOW LIGHT

NAPTHOL CRIMSON

BURNT UMBER

TITANIUM WHITE

YELLOW OXIDE 

I sell starter kits and paint, canvas, sketchbooks, pencils, palettes, brush kits, palette knives etc. Buy 5 tubes of paint (total = $47.50), you receive one extra tube for free.

These brands are all suitable for this course: Jo Sonje, Atelier, Matisse or Liquitex  (No chromacryl or school student brands please). 

We can discuss materials suitable for your budget in your first class. You don't have to bring everything in the first week.
